HOW TO DEVELOP AN ILLUSTRATED FAIRY TALE THAT PORTRAYS HOW A PHYSICALLY DISABLED MAIN CHARACTER TURNS A DISABILITY INTO A STRENGTH.

What did you want to accomplish with your project?

The aim of the project has been to investigate picture books as a medium and to use the knowledge acquired to motivate children and young people to develop a love for reading. To achieve this, I chose to use the semiotic resources in picture books to help hold the focus of a young and restless reader.

What has inspired you?

Western illustrators and visual artists have had a strong influence on my project. I have been inspired by traditional and modern techniques with the aim of finding a form of expression that can carry the theme of the narrative.

What is the result?

Barn av Morgengry (Children of the Dawn) is an illustrated e-picture book in the fantasy genre. It tells the story of a period in the life of its physically disabled hero.

How, specifically, have you chosen to address the research question?

I have addressed the research question by using an interactive short story, where the interplay between sound and movement supports pictures and verbal text. I have attemptedto include the reader in the story by giving him/her the role of a catalyst - i.e. the reader plays a part in activating the full meaning of the images.
By using the semiotic resources in both picture books and e-books, I hope to motivate the reader to explore the verbal text in order to understand the full meaning of the pictures.
