HOW CAN I SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF LACK OF SPACE IN CABINS THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN BUILT AND THAT CANNOT BE EXTENDED DUE TO LEGISLATION AND RESTRICTIONS?
What was the problem you wanted to find a solution to?
Many people dreamed of owning a cabin after the Second World War, and cabins were built in every nook and corner until the building prohibition in the coastal zone entered into force in 1971. There are therefore many small cabins today, steeped in family history, that cannot be extended. I therefore want to make it possible to extend a cabin’s floor space with an extra temporary bedroom to give extended families a chance to holiday together and thus preserve family unity and identity. The family cabin is perhaps the only fixed point that many families share.
What is the result?
The result is Fleksi, a module-based flexible room of about nine square metres in size. The room consists of different elements that are assembled and dismantled as required. The user buys the elements and functions that he/she wants. You can choose the simplest module just for overnight stays and recreation, with a bed that has solid wall elements on both sides, and a front that can be opened completely to provide a panoramic view from the bed. If you want more functions, a module can be assembled with a kitchenette, extra sofa/bed, storage space for jackets and clothes and, in addition, a table for four that can be folded together when not in use. All of the modules have a roof that can be opened so that you can sleep under the night sky, or catch some sun while lying in bed, with the walls providing protection from the wind. The design has been made as simple as possible, so that the user can personalise the modules.
Why has this been important to you?
I grew up with a cabin where the lack of space is now acute. I don’t want to spend my holidays anywhere else or buy another cabin, because I have so many good memories from our family cabin, which I also want to pass on to the next generations. I have spent my holidays there with all my extended family ever since I was born. Since the others at the cabin feel the same, there is now a great need for additional bedrooms and a room you can retreat to when you feel the need.
How do you envisage the project being further developed in future?
The solution of a foldaway room can be endlessly developed in future. I hope that I can find a manufacturer for Fleksi, since cabin owners that I have talked to have expressed that this is something they really need. Fleksi can also be used in other situations; as a hotel in scenic surroundings, giving the guests a chance to sleep outdoors during the summer, or at festivals, which can rent the rooms out to guests who do not want to sleep in a tent. The possibilities are many and I’m looking forward to further developing Fleksi.
